Student Spotlight - Libby

Who is Libby?
Libby is a 5yo Cane Corso who came to me as a foster when she was 12 months old.
Despite the many challenges we had in the early days, of course I fell in love and ended up adopting her. It was very obvious Libby had not been socialised and had very little training, but I realised very quickly that she’s a smart cookie and very willing and eager to learn.
Libby is a true guardian breed, she can take a minute to warm up to new people, and is selective with who she lets join the pack. But once you’re in, her loyalty and affection is next level.
How did you and Libby find your way to Nose Work?
Libby used to be very reactive to other dogs. She still can be, but has improved out of sight.
Up until about 2 years ago, I really had no idea what Nose Work even was. A trainer recommended we try it saying it’s good for reactive dogs.
What made you decide to give it a try?
To be honest, I thought Nose Work would be a bit boring. I was reluctant to even try at first but then figured what have we got to lose.
Boring? Boy was I wrong! Not only has it been amazing for Libby, but also unexpectedly, has been great for me too and now I’m totally obsessed!
What does Libby love most about Nose Work?
Everything!
Libby is an independent thinker and searcher and she thrives on solving the puzzle. I’m really passionate about Dog Driven Search handling methodology and giving Libby the autonomy to lead the search.
Most dog sports and many aspects of our dogs lives are directed and controlled by us, but Nose Work is all about them. After all, they are the ones with the incredible nose. So when it comes to Nose Work, I’m like gurrrl, do your thing. I’m right there with her and supporting her, then at the end I’m her biggest cheerleader. We celebrate and have a big old party. I think that’s what Libby loves the most, celebrating her accomplishments together.
What has Nose Work taught you about Libby?
So much, but mostly how to read her body language and know when she’s feeling uncomfortable, and how to support her and help her work through it.
Libby can be sensitive to new environments and needs to check out the environment and feel safe before she can focus on the search. And really that’s just her doing her job, a security check if you will. What she was bred to do. Nose Work has taught me to honor that.
What has been your favourite Nose Work moment so far?
I’m not sure I have a single moment that stands out. Of course it’s nice to achieve goals and get the titles and ribbons, but really it’s about the joy it brings.
It’s constant learning for both of us and I just love seeing Libby thrive doing something she loves.
What is something you and Libby have worked hard to overcome or improve?
Libby’s reactivity towards other dogs. I spent a lot of time working on this before finding Nose Work, and frankly it was tiring. It wasn’t until we started Nose Work that I really noticed a difference.
Of course Nose Work on its own can’t fix reactivity, but it’s been a big help. I’m not sure we’ll ever completely overcome it, but it’s now manageable and allows us to do things I never dreamed we would be able to do.
What are you working on at the moment?
My goal is to always challenge Libby in a meaningful way while also setting her up for success and continue building her joy and enthusiasm for the game.
We’ve had some successes in trialing and are getting ready to move into the higher levels, so really just working on continuing to build solid foundations while also training for new challenges.
What would Libby say is the best reward after a great search?
The whole reward event. And yes, it’s an event! Verbal praise, treats, physical affection and just an outright party!
What is one thing about Libby that your Nose Work classmates might not know?
Libby is a big goofball. Don’t let the resting bitch face fool you! She comes across as a big tough dog, but she can also be a class clown, playful and fun.
She’s very affectionate and thinks she’s a lap dog.
What's next for Team Libby?
Continue learning, having fun and loving the game of Nose Work.
